Their journey began with extensive research and experimentation. The duo spent countless hours in the field, observing local farming practices and conducting experiments to determine the best methods for growing Ajola. They engaged with local farmers, gathering insights and feedback that would shape their project. This hands-on approach not only enriched their knowledge but also fostered a sense of community involvement, as they aimed to create solutions tailored to the specific needs of their region.
Presenting their findings at APCYS 2024 was a pivotal moment for Rigedbedh and Sujan. Competing against young scientists from across the Asia-Pacific region, they showcased their project with confidence and passion. Their presentation highlighted the benefits of Ajola Farming, emphasizing its potential to enhance food security and promote sustainable agricultural practices. The judges recognized their innovative approach and dedication, awarding them the bronze medal in recognition of their hard work.
The significance of their achievement extends beyond the accolades. Rigedbedh and Sujan’s project serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for other young scientists and aspiring farmers in Nepal. Their success illustrates the power of creativity and determination, encouraging others to pursue their ideas and contribute to sustainable development. The recognition they received at APCYS has also drawn attention to the importance of youth involvement in addressing global challenges, particularly in the agricultural sector.
As they look to the future, both students are eager to continue their work in agriculture and environmental sustainability. They plan to further develop their project, exploring new techniques and expanding their research to include other crops that can thrive in Nepal’s diverse climate. Their ambition reflects a growing awareness among youth of the critical role they play in shaping a sustainable future.
Rigedbedh Khanal and Sujan Shrestha’s journey is a testament to the potential of young innovators. Their bronze award at APCYS 2024 not only honors their hard work but also highlights the importance of nurturing scientific curiosity and creativity in young minds. As they continue to delve deeper into the world of sustainable agriculture, they embody the ultimate spirit of innovation that can lead to transformative change in their community and beyond.

The day meal party was a celebration of these relationships, and a gesture of thanks to both the students and teachers for their unwavering dedication to education. With the help of local community members, the meal featured a variety of delicious dishes, allowing everyone present to experience and share in the local cuisine. The event was filled with joy, laughter, and a sense of unity as everyone came together to enjoy a well-deserved break from their busy schedules.
A Meaningful Gesture
The meal party was more than just an opportunity to enjoy a good meal—it was a moment of bonding for the entire school. As the students and teachers shared stories and laughter, Mr. Aubuchon expressed his heartfelt thanks to each individual for their hard work, resilience, and commitment to building a better future for the community.
“I’ve learned so much from the teachers and students here, and this meal is a small way to show my appreciation for everything they’ve taught me in return,” said Mr. Aubuchon during the event. “The ‘See You Again’ lunch is something I hold dear, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated individuals.”
The “See You Again” lunch is aimed at fostering long-term relationships between volunteers and the communities they serve. Mr. Aubuchon is slated to rejoin Shree Janak Secondary School in May 2025, where he plans to continue his work and further contribute to the school’s development. This meal party was also an opportunity to reflect on the progress made so far and to build excitement for the upcoming reunion.
A Commitment to Education and Service
Since arriving in Nepal in 2024, Mr. Aubuchon has been dedicated to supporting both the students and teachers at Shree Janak Secondary School. He has worked closely with the teachers to improve teaching practices and introduce new ideas for classroom engagement. For students, Mr. Aubuchon has focused on developing their critical thinking skills, providing opportunities for academic growth, and encouraging them to explore new areas of learning.
Beyond academics, he has also initiated community development projects and promoted cultural exchange, helping students gain a broader understanding of the world outside their own community. His efforts have been met with enthusiasm, and his work has had a lasting impact on the school’s atmosphere and the local community.
Looking Ahead to 2025
With just a few days left in his current Peace Corps assignment, Mr. Aubuchon is already looking forward to returning to Shree Janak Secondary School in May 2025. His decision to rejoin the school is a testament to the strong bonds he has formed with the students and faculty, and his desire to continue supporting their growth.
“I’m excited to come back and build on the progress we’ve made so far,” Mr. Aubuchon shared. “The relationships I’ve built here mean a lot to me, and I’m eager to continue making a positive difference.”
The lunch was a perfect example of the impact that Peace Corps volunteers like Mr. Aubuchon have on the communities they serve. By hosting such events and taking the time to appreciate everyone involved, he has strengthened the sense of community at Shree Janak Secondary School, creating a lasting legacy of kindness, gratitude, and dedication.
